My approach to homemaking in midlife came about after having my sons at age 40 and 44. Now I focus my homemaking efforts on how I want my home to feel more than how I want my home to look. If you know anything about the Danish hygge phenomenon – I love that and try to create as much hygge in my home as possible.
Before the boys, I hadn’t given much thought to my approach to homemaking – I blindly followed what my mother had done. That meant lots of bleach and cleaning chemicals, toxic sprays – you name it.
Now, I think of homemaking as anything that enhances my home, has a welcoming vibe, and makes everyone’s experience here terrific. So I try to make it attractive, but at it’s core – I want my home to be functional, comfortable, and inviting. Comfort also means that I want my home to be healthy and to be free of as many toxins as possible.
My goal for my home is to have the house where my friends feel comfortable. I want it to always be the house my boys want to bring their friends to. I want my children to be excited by, not burdened by, a visit home once they have grown and flown. So part of homemaking for me is the obvious – cleaning, recipes, and what you would expect. But homemaking for me also includes family traditions and making memories and mostly love.
