Do you remember yourself as a young woman desperately trying to figure out how to be yourself? As a young woman, I would watch people that I met and reduce them to a caricature. Then I would imagine myself as that caricature.
I worked for an independent custom jeweler as a designer and I remember one customer in particular. She was a true character, and I mean that in the very best way. She was a wealthy Jewish woman who was extremely involved in her community and with her children. She would come in ever three months or so and want a new piece of jewelry designed.
I was awestruck - and I desperately wanted to be her when I grew up. My dreams were quickly shot down when my boss, a dear father figure, joked with me and said it would never happen because I was a "shiksa."
And so I went on for many years - who "could" I be? And I looked everywhere "out there." It's only been as I've matured that I've recognized that to be myself, I need to look "in here."

I believe that creativity is our truest expression of ourselves. So many of us left our creativity behind as children or young adults and we desperately need to take it back. We need to realize that finding an outlet for our creativity feeds our souls and takes us back to who we are inside. You must never care what others believe about your work. It is only your job to create the work, not to judge it.

I was the girl who wouldn’t walk twenty yards to my mailbox without appropriate hair and makeup for fear that I’d be spotted. Teenagers, right? I loved all the special makeup sets and gifts with purchase. The cosmetics sales girl had me on speed dial when something new came in.
And then do you know what I found out after researching the best products to use on my first son when he was a newborn? In the past twenty years, the EU has banned more than 1,300 chemicals in personal care products and restricted the levels of over 250 more. The United States has only partially banned 30 to date. Whaaaaaat????
The truth is, many chemicals have the ability to be absorbed through our skin and into our bloodstream. And once I made a better choice for my sons’ products, I realized that I wasn’t okay continuing to put dangerous chemicals on my skin any longer. It just wasn’t true to who I am and what I value. For hair and skin care, this has been my choice. I feel good, truly good, about using these products every day for our entire family.
Essential oils have been all over the media – with every kind of story you can imagine. They’re hocus pocus. They work! They’re dangerous. They’re all natural! I hate Multi-level marketing – I would never buy those oils! On and on it goes. But here’s the hardcore truth. This hocus pocus stuff works. It just does.
And given that 80% of women earning six-figure incomes earn it by working from home – go baby! I’m all about getting spending power into our hands on our own terms using and sharing products that we already love with our family and friends.
I was the biggest skeptic there was. And then they worked. Again and again – they worked. I have replaced all of the toxic cleaners in our home with purchased or simple DIY products that contain essential oils. Even if others think I’m some odd hippie chick, I feel good knowing that I’ve taken action on my belief that it is better for us to live with fewer chemicals.

When my boys were young, I realized that growing up, my family didn’t have many traditions. And I wanted our family to have many special things that would fill us with joy and anticipation.
I believe that having a family tradition (or twelve) is one of the truest ways to be yourself and express yourself – what activities give you enough joy that you commit to doing them over and over again with the ones you love? Do more of those. A lot more.

Holidays are tricky. As a child, our tradition was small and simple holidays. Once I grew up, I swung far in the other direction – lavish decorations, big dinner parties, and I guilded every lily I could find. After having the boys, I knew I wanted to find that middle, sweet spot that was just right for me and our family. I’ve struggled with changing traditions that I know my parents loved because it was simply more work than felt right for me. But in the end, it isn’t worth sacrificing the holiday that works for you.
