Wouldn’t you just love it if there was a simple mathematical formula to help you reach your goals and in the process gain more self awareness? Well, I have one for you.
In Self Awareness, Pt. 4 – Who’s Got Your Back?, I explored where and how to find support for your journey. Support that you will definitely need.
Commitment to Achieve Self Awareness:
Before I had children, there were times that I was at they gym when it opened at 5:00 a.m. Most days of the week were filled with 1 and sometimes 2 hour work outs. Add to that an hour or so prepping, cooking and packing healthy meals and snacks. I was hard core committed. I was committed. I committed because I was afraid I would get really sick or die. You have to be all in. That’s what your commitment says: I am all in to do what I need to do to reach my goal.
Perseverence to Achieve Self Awareness:
Unfortunately, commitment isn’t enough. If you have children, you know that the pre-child scheduling of workouts and meal prep just won’t hold up any more. With little ones, you are unlikely to be finding 1-2 hours a day for the gym and 1-2 hours a day for food prep, cooking, and packing. Let alone time for a daily shower. Or to go to the bathroom in private. Or to wear your shirt right side out. But I digress… How did I work around that?
After having my first son, what I wanted was to spend as much time with him as possible. Even though I was recovering from a C-section and seriously sleep deprived, I did not want to miss one delicious moment with him. That’s the romantic version of the story. And the rest of the truth is that like many new moms, I was also struggling to keep my head above water with feedings, laundry, meals for adults, nighttime wakings, exhaustion, all the usual suspects. And we didn’t have help – it was just us.
In the midst of all that, I was TERRIFIED of going back to where I had been 120lbs. ago. TERRIFIED. I found myself on our home elliptical from at least 10-11 every night. I was desperate to loose the 70 (yes, I said that out loud, 70) lbs. that I gained with my first son as soon as possible. Despite everything, I was committed and I persevered and I lost all 70 lbs. within the year. BAM!
Commitment + Perseverance = Dedication to Achieve Self Awareness:
So, the formula is easy. Commitment + Perseverence = Dedication. Dedication leads to success. It’s not always fast; in fact, it usually isn’t. But over the long term, dedication works and it sticks with you. The beauty in the process is that it prepares you for a changed existence to come. There’s no sudden change that you can’t stick with. It’s a slow, ever evolving process that takes you in and moves you along with it. Your dedication will show you a new dimension of yourself that you didn’t know you had. Follow dedication and it will lead you to achieve whatever you want. As with everything else, the work it takes is not easy – but you are definitely worth it!
In two weeks, I would love to have you join me again as I talk more about the short term vs. long term dedication and achieving self awareness.
