How does the way we think about sugar change it’s effect on us?

What is Sugar?

So what is sugar? There are two answers. One psychological and one scientific. Let’s start with the more common but more complicated answer: sugar is emotionally charged. We love it! What’s not to love? It makes you feel good! And that feeling isn’t your imagination, it really can “make you” happy (that’s chemical…more about that later in the month). It is always there for a celebration. It’s dependable. It’s soothing. It’s calming. It’s always available. It can serve as a distraction from anything that you may not want to pay attention to in your life.

But the reality is much more simple. Sugar is a chemical molecule made up of twelve carbon atoms, twenty-two hydrogen atoms, and eleven oxygen atoms. That’s all. No emotion. Sugar is defined as:

a sweet, crystalline substance, C 1 2 H 2 2 O 1 1, obtained chiefly from the juice of the sugarcane and the sugar beet, and present in sorghum, maple sap, etc.: used extensively as an ingredient and flavoring of certain foods and as a fermenting agent in the manufacture of certain alcoholic beverages; sucrose.

Shakespeare wrote “What’s in a name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet…” – Romeo & Juliet. I don’t think that works for sugar and sugar addiction as well as it did for the Montagues.

How Do You Think Of Sugar?

You see, how we think of sugar (no matter what we call it) defines power. If in our heart of hearts, we think of sugar as joy, celebration, love, companion, comfort, dependable, or anything else tied to emotion, then we give our power over to sugar. If we can begin to think of sugar as C12H22O11, then it becomes so much less powerful.

Today’s Personal Sugar Addiction Challenge:

Be honest with yourself. Think long and hard about what role sugar plays in your life. Is it an emotional role? Or is it just a molecule with no more or less power than the house plant in the corner of your living room? Simple? Yes. Easy? No.
